What Doodlebugs Do

The Hendersons have been getting ready for Christmas. I used to love the holidays, but that excitement kind of faded with age. However, I am really enjoying Christmas this year because Wyatt is getting into it. He doesn't really understand the basic tenets of Christmas, or know that he will soon be showered with gifts, but he loves lights, trees, ornaments, and blow up reindeer and that's quite enough for him. I, on the other hand, am getting very excited about seeing him open his gifts. We tried not to go crazy because we are trying to raise him without placing excessive focus on material goods (we'll see how that goes) but we did get him a tricycle and a wooden fruit set. I also bought him some slippers but they are way too big, so I might get him another pair. I do anticipate that he will still get many more presents than he needs from his grandparents and aunts and uncles. I am very eager to see that excitement that only small children have for presents.
Other than Christmas preparations, we have been busy trying to keep Wyatt entertained indoors. This is tough. He is an outside boy and it is very hard for him to remain occupied indoors without doing things that drive me a little crazy. We still take him to Central Market to play on the playground as often as possible. He's been going to a few birthday parties which is fun now that he plays with other kids more. In January he will be moving up to a new room at school--fireflies. According to his teachers he has "outgrown the seahorse room." I think this is a diplomatic way of telling me that Wyatt has summitted the tallest bookshelf in the room and they can't handle it any more. I am kind of kidding, but he is very busy boy. He and his best friend Moses will move up together, so that will be fun. I am hoping Wyatt will start perfecting his language skills when he gets into the class with the older kids. When people ask me whether he talks, I usually say "not that much." I finally realized that's not actually true. He talks quite a lot, but only about 40% of it is comprehensible to me. This finally dawned on me when his teacher told me all of the words that he says at school (including some in Spanish). I had never heard many of these words. When I asked him to say the words at home, he did say the words. I just could never have guessed what he was saying. Go figure. Anyway, we are really looking forward to Christmas and I am very excited to have a few extra days off to spend with Wyatt and Ross. I'll post pictures of the Christmas treasures and visits next week. I didn't get a single picture of Thanksgiving this year, so I am resolved to do better for Christmas. Happy Holidays!
This is a picture of Wyatt on his first day of school. His BFF Moses is on the left. This is when they were six months old.
Our tree.
Wyatt sitting on the trunk where he tells me about the tree. No idea what he is telling me.
One touch! He's had a few timeouts for throwing ornaments. He tries to refrain, but sometimes it is just too much for him. The tree is covered with balls. And balls are for throwing. It all makes sense.
This is Wyatt going through my wallet while he watches Daddy mow out the window.
Squeeeezing the play dough. This would be a great indoor activity if I could keep Wyatt and especially Josie from eating the play dough. Thank goodness it is "non-toxic."
