Wyatt's Preschool Graduation

Wyatt's pre-k graduation was June 7. He goes to a hippy baby school so though they planned the program months in advance, the democratic date selection meant we found out last minute when it would be held. There is just one pre-k class of 12 kids, so it was a small affair. The kids sang several songs including the Eyes of Texas, which was much enjoyed. One of Wyatt's classmates' mom works for KUTX so they went to the studio and recorded all of the songs on cd. It is so cute. I am thrilled to have a copy. I was really looking forward to the graduation and it didn't disappoint. The teachers let the students choose which hats they would wear. My little Texan chose a cowboy hat, so we dressed him to match the hat.

Open Door is so named because it accepts children with various developmental and physical differences. Some kids were a little more excited about participating in the program than others. Wyatt, somewhat surprisingly, has really come out of his shy phase and seemed to enjoy performing the songs, though he sometimes forgot to sing along. It was very sweet to see all of the kids singing and laughing. We also got to meet the Hazel Girl, who Wyatt has told us he "loves" because she is sweet and shy and pretty. According to the teachers, she is very well mannered and charming. A great pick, Wyatt :-)

Wyatt starts kindergarten at Mathews Elementary in August. We went to kinder round-up last month and I loved the school. Apparently, 25% of the kids come from other countries, because the boundaries include married graduate student housing for UT. I am very pleased that Wyatt will continue to enjoy the diversity that Open Door has provided. Austin schools are pretty segregated and Mathews is a rather rare exception. It's also really small with just three kinder classes of fewer than 20 students. Wyatt seems really excited. I hope he will like it as much as we've liked Open Door.
