The Birthday Barbeque

For Wyatt's birthday we decided to throw ourselves a barbeque. It has been a long time since we hosted anything at our house (other than holidays with family) so we went whole hog, or um, whole brisket and turkey. According to Jess, Wyatt is a sixth or seventh generation Texan on some side of their family, so we figured BBQ was a good first birthday theme for our son. Ross got up at 4 a.m. to start the meat. Here is Ross carving the brisket.
The finished product -- this is just one of the two 20-pounders.
Momma slaving over Alsatian potato salad that was just not quite as good as Polly's.
Wyatt sporting his new do and duds for the party. He is a big boy now.
This is his pre-party (what the heck is a party, he's thinking) activity of chasing this balloon.
The cake, not homemade, and monkey decorated (of course).
Aunt Christie and cousin Satya.
Dan and Jennifer, they will be hosting their own one-year-old party next spring.
Gigi, Miss Yoli, and the back of Orlando.
Jimbo and Alex with Momar. She's taking a rest after coming early to help with preparation.
Wyatt sampling the birthday fare -- beans, potato salad, broccoli salad, fruit, and bread. He skipped the smoked meats this year.
David Whitworth and new baby Cole.
Pops chilling after his meal.
Teresa, Travis, and Baby Joe. Baby Joe was exhausted and took a snooze in his daddy's arms. We had about ten babies and toddlers and many were sleeping after a couple hours of partying in the yard.
Wyatt is listening to us sing Happy Birthday. He was kinda freaked out by the whole crowd singing to him, but he started smiling at the end. I think he enjoyed the spectacle.
He had his cake and ate it, too. This was his first cake. CAKE!
Winding down the evening with his daddy. Not sure who was most exhausted. All in all, a lot of fun, but I think we will be having a much smaller affair for his next birthday.

4am? That's dedication! It was definitely worth it - from my point of view, at least. Everything was wonderful. I especially liked the broccoli salad. Maybe I can get the recipe? Oh, and, of course, the cake. More than once that evening, I regretted not taking a slice home with me. Hope you all had as much fun as we did!

Looks like you had a great turnout and things went well.

Congrats to mom & dad for surviving the first year! Oh, and I can see why the singing might have freaked Wyatt out a bit.

I love the monkey cake, and it looks like he did, too.
